Guess who stopped in for a quick visit today? None other than Karen Witemeyer!

She only had a minute, but I managed to wrangle one question out of her. Check it out:

How was one of your heroines, “A Lady in Defiance” of the times or circumstances in which she lived?

Emma Chandler, my heroine in No Other Will Do, defies convention not only in her chosen career, but in her life’s mission. Following in her father’s footsteps, Emma Chandler uses her banker’s training and financial resources to start a women’s colony in Texas. Inspired by the suffragette aunts who raised her, Emma believes that men are optional. Women can accomplish anything men can as long as they work together. Therefore, she creates a community open to women of all backgrounds and situations who need a fresh start. Some are career-minded women who are seeking a place to practice their trade without battling male prejudice. Others are escaping abuse. Others have been abandoned or widowed and need an honorable way to earn a living. Under Emma’s guidance, they all come together to form a sisterhood in Harper’s Station, Texas. But when an unknown assailant tries repeatedly to drive the women out, Emma is forced to admit they might need a man after all. One who can fight. And there is only one she trusts enough to ask. Malachi Shaw.

About the Book

Men are optional. That’s the credo Emma Chandler’s suffragette aunts preached and why she started a successful women’s colony in Harper’s Station, Texas. But when an unknown assailant tries repeatedly to drive them out, Emma admits they might need a man after all. A man who can fight–and she knows just the one.

Malachi Shaw finally earned the respect he craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma’s plea arrives, he bolts to Harper’s Station to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she’s not a girl any longer. She’s a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn’t deserve.

As the danger intensifies, old feelings grow and deepen, but Emma and Mal will need more than love to survive.
